How Much Do Floating Lanterns Cost?

Floating lanterns (hoa đăng) are sold separately by local vendors along the Hoai River.

For the best visual results, we usually recommend purchasing 10 floating lanterns, which cost 100,000 VND in total (10,000 VND each).

While floating lanterns are completely optional, they do much more than decorate the scene. Their warm candlelight naturally illuminates your face while creating beautiful reflections on the water—an effect that professional LED lighting alone cannot fully recreate. This is one of the reasons why boat photos with floating lanterns have become such an iconic part of the Hoi An experience.

If you prefer not to release floating lanterns because of personal beliefs, religious reasons, or environmental concerns, simply let your photographer know before your session. We can still create beautiful photos without them, although the final images will have a different atmosphere and won’t include the warm reflections that many visitors associate with Hoi An at night.

For families of more than 10 people, we usually recommend taking photos together along the riverside with floating lanterns instead. CAN WE TAKE TURNS USING THE BOAT IF OUR GROUP IS TOO LARGE?

Yes. If your group is larger than one boat can accommodate, it's possible to divide the session into separate boat rides. However, we normally recommend no more than two rounds. Too many trips can significantly reduce your sightseeing experience, as family members who are waiting onshore may spend a long time without participating in the session. Your photographer can help recommend the most practical arrangement based on your group size.

CAN I BRING A BABY STROLLER ONTO THE BOAT?

Baby strollers are generally not taken onto the boat because space is limited. If you're travelling with a stroller, it can usually be left safely at the official ticket office while you enjoy your boat photoshoot. After returning to the dock, you can collect it before continuing your visit around Hoi An.

WILL WE BE TAKING PHOTOS FOR THE ENTIRE BOAT RIDE?

Absolutely. Many of our guests tell us they feel uncomfortable posing in front of a camera. Our photography style focuses on natural interactions and genuine moments rather than complicated poses. We'll provide gentle guidance only when needed, while encouraging you to enjoy the boat ride naturally. Some of our favorite images are simply people smiling, talking, or quietly admiring the beautiful scenery together.

SHOULD I TIP THE BOAT OPERATOR?

Tipping is completely optional, but it is always appreciated. Unlike a standard sightseeing ride, a boat photoshoot often requires close coordination between the photographer and the boat operator. During the session, the operator may need to carefully adjust the boat's position, move slightly left or right, or hold the boat steady so your photographer can capture the best composition. River currents and surrounding boat traffic often require continuous small adjustments throughout the session. Many boat operators work for the boat owner rather than owning the boat themselves. If you're happy with the experience, a tip of around USD $1–2 is a thoughtful gesture and is generally considered more than sufficient.

ARE FLOATING LANTERNS INCLUDED IN THE BOAT TICKET?

No. Floating lanterns are purchased separately from local vendors along the river. Although optional, we usually recommend using them because they create warm natural light and beautiful reflections on the water, giving your photos a more authentic Hoi An atmosphere. If you prefer not to use floating lanterns for personal, religious, or environmental reasons, simply let your photographer know before your session. Beautiful photos are still possible without them.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS ON THE DAY OF MY PHOTOSHOOT?

Light rain doesn't always mean your photoshoot needs to be cancelled. However, if the weather isn't suitable for a boat session, your photographer may recommend moving the session to the riverside or continuing with a walking photoshoot around Hoi An Ancient Town instead. DO I NEED TO BOOK THE BOAT IN ADVANCE?

HOW LONG DOES A BOAT PHOTOSHOOT USUALLY TAKE?

Although the official ticket allows for up to 20 minutes, the actual sightseeing portion usually lasts around 15 minutes. At that point, the boat operator will normally remind passengers that it's time to return to the dock. For most photography sessions, this is more than enough time. CAN I RELEASE FEWER THAN 10 FLOATING LANTERNS?

Morning is one of our favorite times to shoot at My Khe Beach, especially for families with children or anyone who wants soft, fresh-looking photos. The sunlight is gentler, the beach feels calmer, and you don’t have to deal with the strong midday heat. It’s also a good time if you want to walk barefoot on the sand, enjoy the sea breeze, and take photos without too many people in the background.

Late afternoon

Late afternoon is another beautiful option, especially for couples and solo travelers. The light becomes warmer, the beach feels more relaxed, and the atmosphere is often more romantic. If the weather is kind, this is when My Khe can look especially beautiful in photos, with golden light reflecting on the sand and the sea.

What we usually don’t recommend

Midday is usually the hardest time for a beach photoshoot in Da Nang. The sunlight can be very strong, shadows on the face become harsh, and it’s much easier to end up squinting in photos. It’s still possible to shoot at My Khe at noon, but if you have the flexibility, sunrise or the last hour before sunset will almost always give you a more comfortable experience and better-looking photos.

It’s also worth checking the weather before your photoshoot. In Da Nang, summer afternoons can sometimes bring sudden rain or thunderstorms, and during the rainy season the sea is often rougher, darker, and less appealing in photos. On those days, My Khe Beach may not be the best choice for a family session, especially if you’re traveling with young children who need a more comfortable and predictable environment.

Normally, customers refer to the time from the reviews of tourists who have been to Vietnam, but there is one thing you need to note that the good time to take photos will change according to the season.

In Da Nang, there are 2 seasons: the dry season from January to the end of October and the rainy season from the end of October to mid-December. 4h may be a good time to take photos in the rainy season, but it is not a good time in the dry season. Therefore, the article below can help you choose the right time to take photos.

IF THE LOCATION YOU TAKE PHOTOS IS HE BEACH

There are two times to take beautiful photos on the beach in Da Nang: sunrise, and the time when the sun is very bright. The sun rises around 5am, if you want to take photos at this time, the cost will be more expensive than usual, because the working time is very early.

In the dry season, the sunny time is from 10am or 3pm, this is the time you can take photos against the backdrop of blue sea and blue sky, outside of this time, the sky and sea are gray, especially in the rainy season, taking photos at the beach is not suitable. We also encourage customers to cancel the photo shoot at the beach if the weather is bad. You should also tie your hair when taking photos at the beach because there is often strong wind.

IF THE LOCATION YOU TAKE PHOTOS IS A RESORT

At the resort you can take photos at any time except at night, however, usually resorts also have their own beaches, so to be able to combine beautiful photos at the resort and the beach, you should also refer to the time to take photos at the beach above.

IF YOUR PHOTOSHOOT LOCATION IS HOIAN ANCIENT TOWN

If you take photos in Hoi An, there is a time period you should avoid, which is from 11 am to 3 pm, because this is the time when motorbikes are allowed to enter the ancient town, you will feel the noise and danger due to the traffic of motorbikes. At the same time, this time is also quite hot.

If you want to take photos during the quiet time, from 7 to 8:30 am is a suitable time to take photos in Hoi An ancient town.

In the afternoon, the good time to take photos is from 3:30 pm to 8 pm

We will close after 8 pm, so you will not be able to make an appointment at this time.

IF YOUR PHOTOSHOOT LOCATION IS THE CENTER OF DANANG CITY

We often take photos at locations such as Han market, pink church, and love bridge.

The best time is 10am or 3pm, the Pink Church opens from 8:30am to 11:30am, 1:30pm to 4:30pm and is closed on Sundays, so you won’t be able to take photos at the church on Sundays.

SUNSET TIME

Unlike in temperate countries like Korea, the sunset time in Vietnam is very short, we only have 20 minutes to see the sunset, so if you want to take photos of the sunset, you need to have an experienced photographer, handle the situation well and be proficient with the camera in this short time.

Some of our customers schedule a photo shoot at 7 or 8pm because they think this is the time the sun sets, but this never happens in Vietnam.

In the summer, the sun sets from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.

During the rainy season, the sun sets from 5pm to 6pm. However, the possibility of seeing the sun set during the rainy season is not high, because the sky is cloudy, or there is a thunderstorm from 4pm.

PLACE WHERE YOU CAN TAKE SUNSET PHOTOS

Because the beach in Da Nang is from the east, so most places such as resorts and beaches, the sun will set behind the buildings. You can still schedule a photo shoot during this time, but for better visual effects, you can go to Hoi An ancient town, or Bounce Beach Da Nang to take sunset photos.
