Hoi An Old Town Photoshoot
Hoi An Old Town Photoshoot
If you are planning a trip to Central Vietnam, Hoi An Old Town is one of the most visited destinations alongside Da Nang.
With its yellow-walled alleyways, colorful lanterns, riverside walks, and lively night market, Hoi An is a beautiful place to turn your trip into lasting photographs.
That is why so many couples, families, honeymooners, and babymoon travelers choose to book a photoshoot in Hoi An.
However, first-time visitors often ask similar questions.
“Is Hoi An always crowded?”
“What is the best time for a photoshoot?”
“How does the boat photoshoot work?”
In this guide, we will share useful tips based on real shooting experience in Hoi An, so you can plan your photoshoot with more confidence before your trip.
Why Do So Many Travelers Choose Hoi An?
Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most iconic historic towns and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its old buildings, yellow walls, and traditional atmosphere have been beautifully preserved, and the mood of the town feels completely different between daytime and evening.
For that reason, Hoi An has become a favorite destination for family photos, couple photoshoots, honeymoon sessions, and babymoon photography.
What Is the Most Popular Time for a Photoshoot?
Most travelers choose an afternoon or evening photoshoot in Hoi An.
In particular, the time from around 4 PM until evening is the most popular, because the light becomes softer and you can enjoy both sunset tones and lantern night photos in one session.
However, this is also the busiest time of day for tourism.
During photoshoots, many of our clients ask the same question:
“Is Hoi An always this crowded?”
Yes, Hoi An is usually busy in the late afternoon and evening, especially on weekends and public holidays when the Old Town becomes even more crowded.
But there is no need to worry.
Mona Studio has photographed in Hoi An for many years, so we know the quieter alleyways and hidden corners where we can avoid the crowds and still create beautiful images.
In fact, many clients are surprised when they receive their photos and realize that the streets look much less crowded than they expected.
If You Prefer a Quieter Atmosphere, 7–8 AM Is Also a Great Choice
Many travelers only think about sunset photos, but the morning can be just as beautiful in Hoi An.
Between 7 and 8 AM, the Old Town feels much quieter and more relaxed.
With fewer tourists around, it is easier to walk slowly through the alleyways, enjoy the atmosphere of the town, and have a more comfortable photoshoot experience.
This time of day is especially popular with younger couples.
If Hoi An in the afternoon feels lively and energetic, Hoi An in the morning offers a calmer side of the old town.
In fact, many of our clients say that a morning photoshoot feels much more comfortable than shooting in the afternoon crowds.
Do Lantern Photos Have to Be Taken at Night?
Not necessarily.
Many travelers assume that lantern photos are only possible at night, but beautiful lantern photos can also be taken in the morning or during the day.
Hoi An has many lantern shops and cafés decorated with lanterns, and these places can be a great option if you want lantern photos without the heavy crowds.
If you feel uncomfortable with busy streets and large groups of tourists, a morning photoshoot can be a much better choice.
In fact, some clients feel stressed or overwhelmed by the crowds in Hoi An during the late afternoon and evening.
Photo Spots You Should Not Miss
Yellow-Wall Alleyways
These are some of the most iconic photo spots in Hoi An.
Even simple walking photos in these streets can create a romantic, cinematic feeling.
Hoai River Riverside
This is a lovely place to capture the slower, more relaxed side of Hoi An.
An Hoi Night Market and Lantern Streets
In the evening, this becomes one of the busiest and most popular areas in Hoi An.
Ba Mu Temple Gate (Chùa Bà Mụ)
This has become one of the most popular photo spots in recent years.
With its traditional architecture and reflecting pond, it is one of the best places to create classic Hoi An photos.
Rooftop Cafés
A rooftop café offers a very different view of Hoi An Old Town from above.
It is a special perspective that many regular tourists may not think about, but it can add something unique to your photoshoot.
Hoai River Boat Photoshoot Guide
One of the most special experiences in Hoi An is a boat photoshoot on the Hoai River.
Shooting on the river allows you to capture lanterns, reflections, and the riverside atmosphere all in one frame, which is why many travelers choose this experience.
However, because the boats are quite small, there is a limit on the number of people.
Each boat can carry up to 5 people in total. Since Mona Studio’s team of 2 also boards the boat for the photoshoot, the session is suitable for up to 3 guests.
Life jackets are required while the boat is moving.
In some cases, they may be removed briefly when the boat is stationary for photos, but this depends on the safety rules at the time.
In recent years, waterway safety in Hoi An has become more strictly managed, so guests should follow the boat driver’s instructions. Depending on the situation, the available shooting time on the boat may sometimes be shorter than expected.
Boat Fees and Floating Lantern Prices (2026 Update)
As of 2026, the boat fee in Hoi An is approximately 220,000 VND per boat.
Each boat can carry up to 5 people.
Travelers can also buy floating lantern candles, which are a popular part of the Hoi An river experience.
As of 2026, the price for 10 floating lantern candles is around 100,000 VND.
Please note that prices may change depending on local policies, so it is best to treat these numbers as a reference.
Why Hoi An Is Great Even for a Short Trip
Many travelers assume they need to stay in central Da Nang, but that is not always necessary.
There are also many beautiful resorts and beaches around Hoi An.
If you stay in Hoi An, you can enjoy a wide range of experiences in one area, including:
– Hoi An Old Town
– the night market
– lantern streets
– cafés
– beaches
– resorts
Because so many different experiences are close to each other, Hoi An can be a very efficient and enjoyable choice even for a short trip.
We Also Recommend an Ao Dai Photoshoot in Hoi An
Hoi An is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam for an Ao Dai photoshoot.
The yellow buildings and traditional atmosphere of the Old Town pair especially well with the elegant look of Ao Dai.
You can choose any color you like, but we usually recommend white, cream, pastel tones, and other light colors.
On the other hand, very dark colors such as black or navy may not be the best choice for evening photoshoots, because strong lighting at night can sometimes make undergarment lines more visible through the fabric.
If you are unsure what to wear, feel free to ask us before your session. Based on our experience, we can suggest outfit colors that work well in Hoi An.
