When it’s time for the boat session, your photographer will guide you to the selected boat dock and help coordinate with a local boat operator. Once everything is ready, everyone boards the traditional wooden boat before the journey begins.

For safety, passengers are required to wear life jackets whenever the boat is moving. This is a local safety regulation followed by all boat operators on the Hoai River.

As the boat cruises slowly along the river, your photographer will observe the light, the surroundings, and the position of the boat. When the boat reaches a suitable location with a beautiful view of Hoi An Ancient Town, the boat operator may briefly stop or anchor near the riverbank. At this point, passengers are usually allowed to remove their life jackets for a short time while the photographer captures portraits against the famous lantern-lined riverside backdrop.

We also recommend waiting until you meet your photographer before purchasing any boat tickets. Although tickets are available online, they are not always the best choice for photography. In some cases, online tickets are more expensive, may not include seats for your photographer or assistant, or require departure from a boat dock that isn’t ideal for capturing the iconic scenery of Hoi An Ancient Town.

It’s also best to avoid buying tickets from street vendors. Some boats operate on sightseeing routes outside the Ancient Town, where the river views are very different from the historic lantern-lined backdrop that most visitors hope to capture. Choosing the right departure point and boat route is just as important as choosing the right photographer.

River conditions should also be considered. Water levels on the Hoai River change with the tides, and on certain days some boats may not be able to access the best photography locations. Your photographer can recommend the most suitable departure time or suggest an alternative plan if necessary.

Finally, remember that late afternoon is the busiest time of day for boat rides. Around sunset, long queues at the boat docks are common, especially during weekends and holidays. How Much Does a Hoi An Boat Cost?

Adding a traditional wooden boat to your Hoi An photoshoot is an affordable way to experience the Ancient Town from a completely different perspective.

At the time of writing, there are two official boat ticket options available on the Hoai River:

• 170,000 VND – for up to 3 passengers
• 220,000 VND – for up to 5 passengers

The smaller boat is usually suitable for solo travelers and couples, while the larger boat is ideal for families or small groups.

Boat tickets are not included in your photography package and should be purchased separately at the official boat ticket office. We recommend waiting until you meet your photographer before buying your tickets, as they can advise you on the most suitable boat size and departure point for your photoshoot.

How Much Do Floating Lanterns Cost?

Floating lanterns (hoa đăng) are sold separately by local vendors along the Hoai River.

For the best visual results, we usually recommend purchasing 10 floating lanterns, which cost 100,000 VND in total (10,000 VND each).

While floating lanterns are completely optional, they do much more than decorate the scene. Their warm candlelight naturally illuminates your face while creating beautiful reflections on the water—an effect that professional LED lighting alone cannot fully recreate. This is one of the reasons why boat photos with floating lanterns have become such an iconic part of the Hoi An experience.

If you prefer not to release floating lanterns because of personal beliefs, religious reasons, or environmental concerns, simply let your photographer know before your session. We can still create beautiful photos without them, although the final images will have a different atmosphere and won’t include the warm reflections that many visitors associate with Hoi An at night.

Best Time for a Hoi An Boat Photoshoot

The most beautiful time for a Hoi An boat photoshoot is late afternoon and early evening, when the soft natural light gradually blends with the warm glow of Hoi An’s famous lanterns. During this time, you’ll enjoy the best combination of daylight, golden hour, and the magical atmosphere that makes the Ancient Town so memorable after sunset.

For this reason, most visitors choose to schedule their boat photoshoot in the late afternoon before continuing into the evening as the lanterns begin to light up. This creates a gallery with a beautiful variety of lighting and moods in a single session.

When Should You Avoid a Boat Photoshoot?

Rainy weather is usually the least suitable time for a boat photoshoot.

Although the boats continue to operate during light rain, the experience is often very different from what most visitors expect. To keep passengers dry, boat operators usually cover the boat with a large waterproof canopy. While this provides protection from the rain, it also blocks much of the surrounding scenery, making it difficult to capture the open views of the Hoai River and the historic riverside buildings.

Rain also makes it difficult—or sometimes impossible—to light floating lanterns (hoa đăng). Since the lanterns play an important role in creating warm natural light and beautiful reflections on the water, strong wind and rain can significantly reduce the atmosphere that makes a Hoi An boat photoshoot so special.

For these reasons, if you’ve already booked a session with us and the weather forecast predicts unfavorable conditions, we may recommend postponing or cancelling the boat portion of your photoshoot. Our goal is never simply to complete the session, but to make sure you receive photos that truly reflect the beauty of Hoi An.

In many cases, we can still continue with a walking photoshoot around Hoi An Ancient Town, where covered streets, traditional architecture, and cozy cafés often provide beautiful alternatives even on rainy days.

An Alternative Without Taking the Boat

If weather conditions aren’t suitable for a boat photoshoot—or if you simply prefer not to go on the river—there’s still a beautiful alternative.

Instead of boarding a boat, you can take photos along the riverside while holding floating lanterns (hoa đăng). This allows you to capture the romantic atmosphere of the Hoai River, the glowing lanterns, and the historic riverside architecture without leaving the shore.

Many visitors are surprised by how beautiful these photos can be. With the right composition and lighting, the final images still capture the unmistakable charm of Hoi An, while avoiding concerns about rain, strong wind, or waiting in line for a boat.

All boats operating on the Hoai River are driven by experienced local boat operators who are familiar with the river conditions and approved routes within the Ancient Town. Before the boat departs, passengers are required to wear life jackets in accordance with local safety regulations.

During the photoshoot, the boat operator may briefly stop or anchor at suitable locations near the riverbank. Only when the boat is stationary are passengers usually allowed to remove their life jackets for a short period while photos are being taken. Once the boat starts moving again, everyone should put their life jackets back on before continuing the journey.

If you’re travelling with young children, your photographer and the boat operator will help choose the safest positions on the boat and adjust the pace of the session to ensure everyone feels comfortable throughout the experience.

Weather conditions are also taken seriously. In strong wind or heavy rain, we may recommend postponing the boat session or choosing an alternative photography location instead.
